A walking tour in Nuremberg that brings to life the story of Germany’s first steam-powered railway — the Bavarian Ludwig Railway, which began operating between Nuremberg and Fürth in 1835.

What to Expect

If you’ve already explored the medieval old town, the Imperial Castle, and the Nazi Party Rally Grounds, this tour offers a different perspective on Nuremberg — as a cradle of industrial innovation in the 19th century. You’ll learn:

• How, in 1835, a group of local visionaries launched Germany’s first steam-hauled railway
• The role King Ludwig I of Bavaria played in the project — and which transport idea he actually preferred
• Where the original railway line ran and how it shaped the city
• Who the first locomotive driver was and how much he was paid
• What the first locomotive, Adler (“Eagle”), looked like and how it was transported from England
• How the German railway system developed from this modest beginning
• When and why the monument to the railway was erected — and how often it was relocated
• How the tramway competed with the railway — and ultimately replaced it
• And how the underground (U-Bahn) later took over from the tram

• Meeting point: At the entrance of the Railway Museum (DB Museum), 📍Lessingstraße 6, U2 Opernhaus (Museum visit is not included in the tour!)
